DIY Chalkboard from a Picture Frame

We spent the majority of the day on Saturday working on a hefty to-do list Mike and I recently made. We need to get this house ready to sell with a few touch-ups here and there and some landscape work. Another large task on that list was to go to school and clean out my classroom and start working on my new office. We got a great start and I got things somewhat organized. I’m excited to make it not only functional and organized, but cute:) One way I am going to do that is with this huge chalkboard.
I used this large frame that you may remember me blogging about when I went to Beckie’s chalk paint day. A friend gave us two large canvases years ago and we removed the painting and I painted and distressed the frame with chalk paint. I love the gold flecks that shine through.
I never did anything else with it after the paint job so I thought this would be the perfect project. To keep this project free and easy, we grabbed an extra piece of beadboard we had laying around to use as the actual chalkboard. The back is flat so we are using that as the surface we’ll write on. I measured the frame opening and Mike cut it to size with the table saw. We dry fit it to make sure it would work.
Then I painted the board with some chalkboard paint we had on hand. I gave it 3 coats for full coverage.
Once it was dry, we used wood glue to attach it to the frame.
I glued it in the kitchen so we grabbed a bunch of random items we had nearby to weigh it down to let it dry. Quite the buffet of stuff.
And that was it! I bought some new chalkboard markers from Michael’s to write on it. They are awesome. I love how much prettier they look than chalk and erase just as easily. I might need to buy another pack of colors I like them so much. I’ve never claimed to be an artist so excuse the doodles:)
I can’t wait to hang it in my office. I’ll show you what the whole place looks like when I’ done:)
What would you use a huge chalkboard for?
