Applique Painted Onesies {Tulip Fabric Paint Project}
June 24, 2013 | Posted by Jessie under Baby, Crafty Things, Gifts, Paint, Pudge, Stuff I like |
I’m so excited to share these sweet little onesies that I made for Molly recently! They only took me about 30 minutes to make both and a few dollars in supplies.
I used a similar method to make both. Here is what I used:
- onesies {$9 for 5}
- scrap fabric
- Heat N Bond {$3}
- Tulip brand puff paint and fabric paint
- iron
- scissors
- computer
Let’s start with the dog silhouette. I took a side view picture of Pudge to create my silhouette. Molly and Pudge are already becoming fast BFFs so it was only fitting that she had a shirt with him on it:) Here is the picture I took. I changed it to black and white to make it easier to see when I made the silhouette.
I grabbed some fabric to trace the silhouette. You could print the picture off and do it that way, but tracing straight from the computer was easier and quicker. I simply turned the brightness up so I could see the dog easier. Then traced it with a pencil onto the fabric. Side note-I ended up using a different fabric for the onesie, so you’ll see a different color in the tutorial pics below.
Then I used Heat N Bond to adhere it to the shirt. It’s really easy to use. Simply lay your fabric on the sticky side of the Heat N Bond and iron it for about 8 seconds until it is adhered {the directions are on the package}.
Once it cools after a minute or two, cut out the shape.
Then peel the back of the Heat N Bond off and iron it to the shirt.
Then I added some Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paint.
Ya know, that cool stuff from the 80s and 90s that we all made sweet sweatshirts out of? My 8th birthday was a puff paint party. We decorated shirts and hats. I was pretty cool back then. As cheesy as it seems looking back, fabric paint can be cool again. Here is some information from Tulip:
Tulip continues to be a craft favorite in households today! In addition to Tulip Soft Paints and Dimensional Fabric paints included in my post, Tulip is known for it’s wide variety of Fashion Glitters, Glam it up Crystals, Fabric Markers and One-Step Tie Dye! Molly is here to prove it’s cool again! I was sent a whole slew of colors to use for these adorable shirts and had a hard time deciding which to use to liven up the Pudge onesie.
I used the scrap fabric from the cut out and tried a few colors out before deciding.
They all had a different look and I was torn, but ended up going with the glittery white on the white polka dots. I liked how simple and pretty it looked on the pink fabric.
Then I moved on to the “Molly” shirt. I used the same method of tracing the fabric from the computer. I just used Word and found a font I liked, sized it to the onesie, and traced it.
I used the same Heat N Bond process as above and put the M off center on the onesie.
Once it was attached, I used a stencil and some Tulip Soft Fabric Paint. Once again, I had a range of color choices, but ended up settling on the purple.
Then I stenciled it on carefully.
And that was it. They turned out really cute!
See? Totally cute and modern! In fact, all this summer Tulip is bringing tie dye to the masses with their Tie Dye Your Summer campaign! Visit their Tie Dye Your Summer site at Tie Dye Your Summer. We were down at the cabin this weekend with Mike’s family and had a couple adorable models for these onesies. Molly and her cousin Bea wore them. They are only three days apart and we’re already forcing them to be best friends:) If only they would look at each other. Apparently baby to baby eye contact is tricky. We had a little photo shoot with the babies and I had a hard time picking just a few for the blog. They are so darn funny and cute! Since they are only 10 weeks old, sitting up isn’t quite perfected yet which makes the whole darn thing funnier.
Isn’t that hilarious??? The matching ruffle shorts just make the outfit.
So what do you think about fabric paint? Would you use it today?
