How to Frame Around a Mounted Mirror

We are slowly but surely finishing up the guest bathroom and will hopefully have the final reveal by the end of the week. In the meantime, I thought I would show you how we framed around our mounted mirror. There are tons of tutorials out there on how to build and glue a custom frame to a builder-grade mirror, but our mirror has those annoying tabs to hold the mirror on the wall. A frame that you need to glue to the mirror wouldn’t work in our situation because it wouldn’t be flush with the mirror unless we removed the mirror from the tabs and reattached it to the wall somehow. That was too much work for us, so we decided to frame around the mirror instead.
Since this is a small room with a small mirror, we thought this would give the mirror a finished look without being difficult. Mike had some trim from his clinic that they moved from and we used that to frame the mirror, as well as to finish off the top of the beadboard. He measured around the mirror first. Here is what it looked like before {mid-painting}.
We attached the beadboard to the walls first and then simple put the mirror frame right over top of it. Mike cut the corners at 45 degree angles for a pretty corner seam and nailed all four pieces into place with a nail gun.
This is what it looked like once it was installed.
I went back and forth on whether to paint it white, french linen to match the vanity, or do something different and decided to go with the white. I like the fresh, clean, bright look of the white everywhere in here. I also love the contrast of the white walls and trim with the dark granite.
You could buy trim inexpensively and create this same look in about 30 minutes. It’s a simple and cheap way to give your mirrors a more custom look.
Hopefully I’ll be back soon to show you a complete reveal of this whole makeover!
