DIY Centerpiece Box

Hi everyone! Hope you had a great weekend. I spent Saturday helping my mom and a few of her friends throw a bridal shower. You read about my DIY gift bags that we gave as favors last week, and today I’m going to share how Mike built some centerpiece boxes to house the ferns we used on each table.
We started with some poplar wood and we figured out the size by the size of the fern planter. Mike cut one bottom piece to size and then traced it onto the other boards to make them all the same size.
Then he cut the side pieces at a 45 degree angle so they would fit together perfectly in the corners.
He cut enough for 4 sides and one bottom for each box {the bottom pieces do not have the angle cuts-they are just straight sides}.
Then we stained them a rich red mahogany color.
He laid out all 5 pieces next to make sure they would line up correctly.
And then used the nail gun to attach the sides to each othe and to the bottom.
Then it was time for mom and I to dress them up a little. We added bright blue and green ribbon to them {the bride’s wedding colors} by attaching them with glue dots.
After trying {and failing} a few different methods, we ended up just folding the edge over {sort of like a hem} and gluing it that way. The edge wasn’t noticeable once we added the large fern inside.
Each box cost around $5.00 to build and made such a statement on the tables with the gift bags.
We also sat a centerpiece on the wine table {since the shower was at a winery/restaurant}.
The bride loved the look and they added so much personality to the tables. What did you do this weekend? Anyone have any fun centerpieces to share?
P.S. I’m guest posting over at the CSI project today sharing my new kitchen rug makeover! Make sure to stop by and check it out:)

The centerpieces turned out great. Will you keep them or did you give them to the bride? They are really something anyone could use at home. Great work.
Thanks, Kim! We actually gave them away to the bride, mothers, grandmothers, and I got to take one home also:) It’s sitting on our kitchen table and makes a perfect little spring centerpiece.
What a great tutorial! I pinned it… hope that’s OK.
Thanks, Alexandra! And, of course it’s ok to pin-thanks:)
I love it, thanks for the tutorial, I even think I could attempt one of these and I’m not all that practical!
