Charlie Brown Inspired Christmas

This week has turned into a little Christmas decor extravaganza, hasn’t it? I was on my way home from school yesterday, ready to get to work on a little winter set-up in the dining room when I was suddenly inspired and changed my plan. I was listening to K-Love, who played a scene from Charlie Brown Christmas, and I knew it needed to be part of my Christmas scene. Actually, it became the centerpiece.
I had a completely different Christmas quote in mind, but ended up using a snippit of this actual scene {the quote I painted is in bold below}:
Charlie Brown: I guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn’t have picked this little tree. Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I really don’t know what Christmas is all about.
[shouting in desperation]
Charlie Brown: Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?
Linus Van Pelt: Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.
[moves toward the center of the stage]
Linus Van Pelt: Lights, please.
[a spotlight shines on Linus]
Linus Van Pelt: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: for behold, I bring unto you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.’ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’”
[Linus picks up his blanket and walks back towards Charlie Brown]
Linus Van Pelt: That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.
Gotta love Charlie Brown…so beautiful and meaningful.
I loved the scene so much, I grabbed a scrap piece of wood from the garage and recreated part of it for my home.
I used Rust-oleum spray paint in white gloss and winter gray gloss.
I started by spraying a thin, uneven coat of white.
Then I grabbed the gray and went over top of the white, while it was still wet.
I let the whole thing dry and then started on my stencils. I used a craft brush and two different stencil fonts and sizes. My small stencil ran a little bit so it’s fuzzy in some spots, but I think it adds to the character {at least that’s what I’m telling myself}.
I love it. The spray paints created such a cool effect and the quote brings so much meaning and simplicity to the season.
For the rest of the buffet, I added some Dollar Store ornaments and pine cones, some greenery from the bottom of our tree, and a couple large ornaments on cake plates to flank the pretty Charlie Brown board. I started with part of two glass cake plate stands that we snatched from my in-laws attic.
And sprayed them with the same white Rust-oleum gloss paint.
And put my giant Dollar Tree ornaments on them. Here are a few more shots of the finished vignette.
So there you have it. A Charlie Brown inspired Christmas…a reminder that Christmas is more than sparkles, stockings, pretty gifts, and bells. A beautiful message of the greatest gift any of us have ever received.
