Gray, Blue, Taupe, Purple, White

Have you ever tried to paint a room gray? I mean, real gray. Not taupe, white, blue, purple, or any other color that gray magically becomes when you put it on a wall. It’s almost impossible. The color can even be called “____ gray” or “gray _____” and be 100% blue. I wanted the perfect, soft, steely gray for our bedroom and after lots of searching and about 60 samples and finally found it {side note: I realize this may read differently on different computer screens, so just take my word that it truly is gray:)}.
I ended up using the “too dark” sample to fill in our molding on the tv wall. It is subtle but makes the molding pop so much more. Here is the tv wall with the old blue walls:
And here it is now with my two-toned walls:
See how much more the molding stands out? I love it. And the soft gray goes so nicely with all the white trim in the room.
And also with the dark furniture and silvery artwork:
So, after going to Home Depot, Sherwin Williams, Porter Paints, and Menards, and collecting all these samples
Here’s the secret “perfect gray”: Edge of Night by Dutch Boy. You’re welcome.
Jessie! I needed this post so much right now. I am planning to turn one of our guest rooms into my “office” which really means I’m making it a girly but sophisticated hangout. I want gray walls so the colors I picked to accent will really pop. I was just thinking how hard it was going to be to pick the right shade of gray. Thank you so much! Where is Dutch Boy sold?
Good! I’m glad it was helpful:) Dutch Boy is sold at Menards {and probably other places but that is where I got mine}. The paint guy told me to get this color but use their other brand of paint-I think it’s called like Grand Distinction? Anyway, I only used half of a gallon for our entire bedroom! The color was great and the paint covered really well. Good luck! I want to see the office when it’s done!
I did the same search, i found a perfect gray, but a little darker for my bedroom and i found it at Walmart, they have Dutch Boy paint, so may be the same place. Mine was called Elephant Gray.

Thanks. Needed the confirmation on the gray. I also chose Edge of night for living room and stairway. Went through a lot of gray samples before finaling going with my first instinct. funny. Thanks again. Would love to see more pics.
We’re planning to paint all the living-areas in our new house grey… but we’re finding the same thing - “grey” means many different things! haha.
Definitely going to get my hands on a paint chip of “Edge of Night” to test it out
