Mike’s Work Bench

Since I’m roping Mike into all these projects, he has decided to create a little more workspace for himself in the garage. This sweet work area came with the house but Mike wanted to expand his work space.
Before:
As you can see, we have lots of crap so he could use a little more counter space. After redoing our kitchen island, we had a counter top sitting around with no use. {Ignore all the white paint marks-we used it as a painting surface when we painted the front cabinets.}
Mike decided to use it to create this super cool, industrial bench.

I’ll let him explain from here.
Well, I wanted an extra work space… but maybe not permanently. I can be non-committal at times so I wanted to be able to move it pretty easy if I wanted. I thought of this draw -bridge idea that would fit both ideas. All I needed was a length of chain, 2 hinges, and those hooks that I used to hang the TV. First I spray-painted the countertop in a metallic black color to look more garagey. I screwed in 2 heavy-duty hooks into the wall studs as near to the end of the edge of the countertop as I could. I then screwed the other 2 hooks into the ends of the countertop to match the hooks in the wall. I made the chains equal lengths. I propped up the countertop at the proper height (equal with the existing workbench) and attached the hinges to the studs in the wall and the countertop.
You can see it hanging in the work-bench position but it can also swing up and attach to the wall with a simple string. I attached a small screw in bottom of the countertop and a nail in the middle of the wall. A short string hangs from the nail and easily holds the new workbench up when I need it out of the way.

It always amazes me how you two make use of the stuff you have around the house! Very cool and functional idea Mike! GREAT job!!!
Awesome, I love it!

Thanks, Kevin! Layla and I are lucky ladies having such handy men around:)
Great Idea! We’re getting ready to finish our work room/laundry room and need as much storage/working area as possible!
