Built-In Desk

Well I put the hubs on another project. Good thing he loves me so much or my house would be bare. We decided to finally tackle a desk to put in our kitchen nook. We have gone back and forth on what to put there-a hutch, storage dresser thing, and finally decided on a built-in desk. It would be more functional for us because we don’t really have a bunch of china we want to display and would get more use out of an organizing/mail/computer area.
Before (sorry it’s not the best pic but you can see it was used for puppy storage):
After:
We used a door for the desk itself that Mike snatched up from his parents house that they weren’t using anymore and cut it to size. We primed, painted, antiqued, and finished it with a coat of poly. Then we bought country-style table legs from Home Depot then painted and distressed it as well. We found this cute little stool (which we also painted and distressed) at our fave store-Walmart and I made a seat cushion with leftover fabric from our new kitchen table seat covers. We also trimmed it out to give it a nice, built-in, finished look.
To spruce it up, we added a couple little metal buckets that we use for pens, etc. You can read about our mail center here.
This project cost $33: table legs-$16 and stool-$17. Pretty good for a built-in desk, dontcha think?
Your seat cover is gorgeous. You really did an awesome job with it! I love the computer nook you’ve created! All that for $33! that’s really great!
Thanks, Brandi! It’s been very useful for us. We are working on some accessories for it so watch for upcoming posts!
LOVE desks built out of doors! We did the same thing for our office. Great job!
Thanks, Brook! The doors are such a great, cheap way to create a desk. I’ll have to check out your blog and see yours too!

I know this is a silly question, but how did you attached the door to the wall to keep it level and steady? Great use of space, awesome job!
Hi Deanna!
That isn’t a silly question! I should have talked about that on the post. We put 2×2 boards under as support braces, one on each side and one along the back. Those are screwed into the desk, as well as the studs in the walls. It’s nice and tight in there and should be able to hold a good amount of weight. I hope this helps!
hi! coming over from I.C. i love your white and clean (!) desk! we have a kitchen desk too and use it all the time (where i am sitting now). it was already bulit in, but for 2 years we had wires hanging all over the place. my husband built a little shelf under the desk to set the power strip and all the other countless wires we have down there. now you can’t see a thing!
The shelf is a great idea. We may have to make one up this weekend!
That was neat! I love the polka dot holders!

I have a weird kinda built in tv space in my living room that would be PERFECT for something like this! We’re moving the tv to the wall, so all thats left is a weird super low cabinet and some make-shift shelves hubby put in. Looks like he’s got a new project
Is it okay to post some of this on my page if I post a reference to this page?
